Is an in-law suite the same as an ADU?
If it has its own kitchen, bath and entrance, it is usually treated as an ADU and follows ADU rules.
Can a family member live there?
Yes. Massachusetts towns cannot require a family relationship or owner occupancy for a by-right ADU.

Planning and permits often take one to three months; construction usually several months depending on size.
